Salma Hayek earned an Oscar nomination for her fierce, physically committed performance as Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter whose life was shaped by a devastating bus accident, chronic pain, bisexuality, and a volatile marriage to fellow artist Diego Rivera, played by Alfred Molina. Director Julie Taymor brings her theatrical, visually inventive sensibility to Kahlo's own surrealist imagery, staging dream sequences and painted tableaux that dissolve the line between the artist's life and her canvases. The film helped introduce Kahlo's work to a much wider mainstream audience and remains one of the most acclaimed biopics of a visual artist. Hayek, who had spent nearly a decade trying to get the project made, also served as producer, making it a defining passion project of her career.
