Dwayne Johnson plays a nameless ex-convict known only as Driver, who is released from prison after a decade and immediately begins a methodical, brutally efficient killing spree targeting each of the men responsible for murdering his brother during a botched heist years earlier, while a conflicted cop and a professional hitman both close in on him from different directions. The film strips its revenge-thriller premise down to a stark, minimalist structure, letting Johnson's imposing physical presence and grim silence carry much of the film in place of dialogue. Billy Bob Thornton and Oliver Jackson-Cohen add texture as, respectively, the world-weary detective and the philosophy-quoting assassin both pursuing Driver. Critics found it a leaner, more grounded change of pace from Johnson's usual blockbuster fare, praising its stripped-down, almost meditative approach to genre revenge.
