John Boorman's 'Excalibur' is a lush, operatic retelling of the Arthurian legend, from the sword in the stone through the rise and fall of Camelot to the quest for the Grail. Nigel Terry plays Arthur, with Helen Mirren as Morgana and a young Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne and Patrick Stewart in support. Visually ravishing and steeped in myth and Wagnerian grandeur, it revels in mud, blood and mysticism. Divisive on release, it has become a cult touchstone of fantasy cinema.
