Ivan Reitman's alien-invasion comedy imagines what happens when a meteor crash-lands in small-town Arizona carrying microscopic organisms that evolve at an absurdly accelerated rate, rapidly producing increasingly dangerous creatures. David Duchovny and Orlando Jones play community-college science teachers who realize the threat before the government does, teaming with a klutzy firefighter (Seann William Scott) and a disease-control scientist (Julianne Moore) to stop it. Positioned as a knowing, gross-out riff on Ghostbusters and 1950s creature features, the film leans into practical and CGI monster gags rather than horror tension. It found a modest audience as an easygoing genre spoof rather than the blockbuster its studio had hoped for.
