Clint Eastwood plays Frank Morris, the real-life inmate who, alongside two brothers, executed one of the only escapes ever attempted from the supposedly inescapable Alcatraz federal prison, using little more than spoons, a raincoat raft and papier-mâché decoy heads. Director Don Siegel, Eastwood's frequent collaborator, strips the prison drama down to patient, procedural tension, favoring meticulous detail over sensationalism as the plan is assembled piece by piece under constant surveillance. Whether the trio survived the night swim to freedom remains officially unsolved, and the film leans into that ambiguity rather than manufacturing false closure.
