In the last week of eighth grade, before the leap to high school, Kayla Day struggles as best she can through the tide of adolescence in an American suburb: she posts timid self-help videos to YouTube that almost no one watches, wrestles with social anxiety, and tries to fit in while her loving, clumsy father tries to reach her. Between awkward parties, first flirtations and the chasm between real life and the one displayed on social media, the film follows with tenderness and rawness the emotional pulse of a girl in the midst of metamorphosis. Bo Burnham's debut feature is a dramedy of disarming honesty about growing up in the age of the smartphone. A portrait of shyness as funny as it is painful.
