Oscar Wilde's cautionary tale gets a lavish, gothic-tinged adaptation, following the impossibly handsome Dorian Gray as he's seduced into hedonism by the cynical Lord Henry Wotton and commissions a portrait that will age and corrode in his place while he remains eternally young and unmarked by his sins. Ben Barnes plays Dorian's descent from naive beauty to monstrous decadence, while Colin Firth's Lord Henry supplies the film's most quotable, corrosive wit. The film leans into overt horror-fantasy visuals for the decaying portrait itself, more explicit than earlier adaptations dared to be. A handsome if somewhat overstuffed Victorian morality tale about vanity's true cost.
