Christina Aguilera makes her film debut as a small-town girl who flees to Los Angeles and lands a job at a struggling burlesque club run by Cher's world-weary Tess, eventually stepping onstage to save the place from closing. The film leans entirely into backstage-musical formula — the ingenue with the big voice, the scheming rival, the club on the brink — while giving Aguilera and Cher (in her first film role in years) full musical numbers to sell. It's glossy, over-the-top spectacle rather than substance, a showcase built for its two singing stars more than for any narrative ambition.
