Mike Flanagan
Director · Writer
Mike Flanagan is an American director born in Salem, Massachusetts, celebrated for emotionally resonant horror that grounds supernatural dread in genuine grief and family trauma. Oculus and Hush established his patient, tension-driven style, while Gerald's Game, adapting a supposedly unfilmable Stephen King novel about a woman handcuffed to a bed after her husband's death, showed his ability to sustain intense psychological horror within a confined setting. Doctor Sleep, a sequel to both King's novel and Kubrick's The Shining, demonstrated his skill navigating a beloved horror legacy. Flanagan has also built a significant television career with Netflix, creating The Haunting of Hill House and its sequel Bly Manor, both blending genuine scares with deep emotional grief, alongside Midnight Mass. Flanagan's consistent grounding of horror in authentic grief and family trauma has made him one of the most significant contemporary voices in the genre.
