Max Zhang, born in Chongqing in 1974, was trained in wushu before turning to acting and became one of the most credible on-screen martial artists of his generation. He came to international attention as Razor in Ip Man 3 (2015), a supporting role that essentially stole the film, and returned to the character as the lead of Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (2018). He also worked with Wong Kar-wai on The Grandmaster (2013) and headlined the Hong Kong action title SPL II: A Time for Consequences (2015). He continues to anchor mainland and Hong Kong martial-arts productions, and is regarded as one of the few current stars able to sustain the classic kung fu leading-man tradition.
