Born in Saitama in 1988, Masahiro Higashide came out of modelling and quickly moved into film with Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who cast him as the strange, silent man in Creepy (2016), then as the alien visitor in Before We Vanish (2017). He led the two long-time-friends drama Asako I & II (2018) for Ryusuke Hamaguchi, playing the double role that gave the film its shape. He returned to Kurosawa for further collaborations and appeared in mainstream Japanese cinema throughout the late 2010s. Lean, watchful and deliberately blank, he became a face directors reach for when they want unease held in stillness.
