Mary Tyler Moore, an American actress and producer born in Brooklyn in 1936, redefined the image of women on American television. She rose to fame as the modern wife on 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' and reached icon status with 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' (1970-1977), where her single, independent journalist embodied a new femininity. Though she shone in television comedy, winning seven Emmy Awards, she surprised audiences with a dramatic turn in film that earned her an Oscar nomination for Robert Redford's 'Ordinary People' (1980). She also left her mark in the musical 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'. Warm and luminous in comedy, yet capable of a heartbreaking coldness in drama, she was also an active advocate for causes such as the fight against diabetes.
