Lino Brocka

Lino Brocka was a Filipino director born in Pilar, Sorsogon, widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in the history of Philippine cinema. Manila in the Claws of Light, following a young provincial man's desperate search for his missing girlfriend through Manila's exploitative underworld, became a landmark of Filipino social-realist cinema and established Brocka's unflinching examination of urban poverty and corruption under the Marcos dictatorship. Insiang, a devastating tale of a slum-dwelling young woman's revenge after sexual assault, extended his focus on poverty and exploitation with unusual psychological intensity for its era. Brocka was also a prominent political activist openly critical of the Marcos regime, repeatedly clashing with government censorship. His unflinching social realism and open political defiance made him the most historically significant filmmaker in Philippine cinema history.
