Born in Kokura, Fukuoka in 1963, Lily Franky came to acting after a long career as an illustrator, essayist and novelist, whose Tokyo Tower memoir became a bestseller. Hirokazu Kore-eda cast him as the ambivalent father in Like Father, Like Son (2013) and again in Shoplifters (2018), which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. He also anchored Sion Sono's Guilty of Romance (2011) and appeared in Kore-eda's Our Little Sister (2015). His slightly rumpled warmth and understatement have made him one of the most in-demand character actors in modern Japanese cinema.
