José Ferrer

The first Hispanic actor to win an Oscar, Puerto Rican José Ferrer (1912-1992) was a figure of enormous prestige both in theater and in film. Born in Santurce, he was established on Broadway with his Cyrano de Bergerac, a role he brought to the screen in 1950 and for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor, a historic milestone for Latino performers. He also shone playing the painter Toulouse-Lautrec in 'Moulin Rouge' (1952), which earned him another nomination, and he appeared in superproductions such as 'Lawrence of Arabia'. An actor of impeccable diction and intense presence, he combined classical elegance with a notable dramatic depth that placed him among the greats of his time.
