John Ireland

Born in Vancouver in 1914 and raised in New York, John Ireland found his defining role as the disillusioned reporter Jack Burden in Robert Rossen's All the King's Men (1949), which won Best Picture and brought him an Oscar nomination. He was already a familiar Western presence, having ridden with Henry Fonda in John Ford's My Darling Clementine (1946) and Montgomery Clift and John Wayne in Howard Hawks's Red River (1948). He later played the Roman general Crassus in Kubrick's Spartacus (1960), and worked steadily in European genre cinema through the 1970s. He remains a rugged, articulate second lead of postwar Hollywood.
