James Gray is an American director born in New York City, celebrated for melancholic, classically composed dramas often rooted in his own Queens upbringing and family history. Little Odessa and The Yards established his interest in crime and family loyalty within Russian and working-class immigrant communities, while We Own the Night and Two Lovers continued this focus with a somber, character-driven intensity. The Immigrant, a period drama following a Polish immigrant navigating exploitation in 1920s New York, and Ad Astra, a more expansive science-fiction meditation on fatherhood and isolation, showed his range while retaining a consistent emotional register of longing and regret. Gray's reputation, stronger in Europe than in his native United States for much of his career, has grown steadily as a filmmaker whose classical visual restraint and emotional gravity set him apart from more overtly stylized contemporaries.
