人気時代劇シリーズの第５作。座頭市は、旅の途中、道で倒れているひとりの瀕死の老人から、お美津という女性の身を救ってほしいと頼まれる。日本橋の大店のお嬢様である彼女は、とある若殿から見初められて屋敷に奉公することになり、殿に手籠めにされそうになるのを必死で抵抗して逃げ出してきたのだった。かくして市は、彼女と道中を共にすることになるが、市の命を付け狙う浪人者の岬の甚五郎や情婦のお久が、お美津にも目をつけるようになる。
