An absolute pioneer, Ida Lupino was one of the very few women who directed in the Hollywood of the forties and fifties, as well as an intense actress. Born in London in 1918 into a family of artists, she first stood out before the camera in dramas such as 'High Sierra' and 'They Drive by Night' alongside Humphrey Bogart. Dissatisfied with the roles she was offered, she moved into directing with bold works on taboo subjects such as 'Outrage' and 'The Hitch-Hiker', the latter a notable film noir. She was also a prolific television director. Her dual career made her a pioneering and admired figure of American cinema.
