Hirokazu Kore-eda

Hirokazu Kore-eda is a Japanese director born in Tokyo, celebrated for tender, deeply humane family dramas that have made him one of the most internationally significant contemporary Japanese filmmakers. Nobody Knows, based on a real case of abandoned children secretly surviving alone in a Tokyo apartment, established his patient, observational style centered on children and fractured families. Like Father, Like Son and Our Little Sister continued his gentle examination of chosen and biological family bonds, while Shoplifters, following a makeshift family of petty criminals bound by affection rather than blood, won the Palme d'Or and became his most internationally celebrated film. Broker and Monster, the latter winning the Queer Palm and a posthumous award for composer Ryuichi Sakamoto's score, extended his humanist focus into Korean and contemporary Japanese settings respectively. Kore-eda's consistent warmth and refusal of melodrama in depicting family bonds have made him the natural heir to Yasujirō Ozu's tradition of quiet domestic humanism.
