Freddie Francis
Freddie Francis, born in London in 1917, is best remembered as one of the finest cinematographers in the history of British cinema, though he also had a long parallel career as a horror director. Behind the camera he won two Academy Awards, for Jack Cardiff's Sons and Lovers (1960) and Edward Zwick's Civil War epic Glory (1989), and photographed David Lynch on The Elephant Man (1980), Dune (1984) and The Straight Story (1999). As a director he specialised in gothic horror for Hammer and Amicus, delivering Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968), The Skull (1965) and Doctor Terror's House of Horrors (1965). By his death in 2007 he had shaped both the look of major studio films and the visual grammar of British horror.

Frederick William (Freddie) Francis BSC (22 December 1917 – 17 March 2007) was an English cinematographer and film director. He achieved his greatest successes in the former, including winning two Academy Awards, for Sons and Lovers (1960) and Glory (1989).
