Considered one of the great performers of German silent cinema, Emil Jannings was the first actor in history to receive the Oscar, awarded at the inaugural ceremony of 1929 for 'The Last Command' and 'The Way of All Flesh'. His European fame had been forged with Murnau's masterpieces 'The Last Laugh' and 'Faust', and with 'Variety', where he shone as a performer of the ravaged face and body. Back in Germany he starred alongside Marlene Dietrich in 'The Blue Angel' (1930), his triumphant passage to sound. His reputation was, however, ruined by his collaboration with the Nazi regime and UFA's propaganda, which sank his career after the defeat of 1945. He was an actor of tragic intensity, a master of gesture and humiliation on screen.

Emil Jannings (1884–1950) was a German actor, the first to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. Between 1926 and 1929, he worked in Hollywood. Upon returning to Germany, he sympathized with the Nazi regime and was one of the advisors to Universum Film-Aktiengesellschaft (UFA), the film studios controlled by Goebbels as a propaganda weapon. With the end of World War II and Germany's defeat, his career fell into disgrace.
