Bob Fosse

Bob Fosse was an American director and choreographer born in Chicago, Illinois, who brought the sharp, sexually charged visual language of Broadway choreography into some of the most stylistically influential films of the 1970s. Cabaret, set in decadent Weimar-era Berlin as Nazism rises around its nightclub performers, won Fosse the Academy Award for Best Director and remains one of the most acclaimed movie musicals ever made. All That Jazz, a semi-autobiographical account of a self-destructive director-choreographer, turned his own workaholic excess and health struggles into a dazzling, self-lacerating musical fantasy. Lenny, a stark black-and-white biography of comedian Lenny Bruce, and Star 80, a bleak account of a murdered Playboy model, showed his range into unflinching dramatic biography. Fosse's fusion of sharp editing rhythm with the isolating, sexualized choreography he had perfected on stage made him one of American cinema's most singular visual stylists.

Robert Louis “Bob” Fosse (June 23, 1927 – September 23, 1987) was an American actor, dancer, musical theater choreographer, director, screenwriter, film editor and film director. He won an unprecedented eight Tony Awards for choreography, as well as one for direction. He was nominated for an Academy Award four times, winning for his direction of Cabaret (beating Francis Ford Coppola for The Godfather). He was closely identified with his third wife, Broadway dancing star Gwen Verdon. She was both the dancer/collaborator/muse upon whom he choreographed much of his work and, together with dancer/choreographer Ann Reinking, a significant guardian of the Fosse legacy after his death.Bob Fosse, licensed under CC-BY-SA, full list of contributors on Wikipedia.
