Baz Luhrmann is an Australian director born in New South Wales, celebrated for maximalist, hyper-stylized films blending music, spectacle, and heightened theatrical romance. Strictly Ballroom, following competitive ballroom dancers rebelling against a rigid dance federation, established his exuberant visual style before Romeo + Juliet, a modernized adaptation of Shakespeare set amid gang violence, and Moulin Rouge!, a jukebox musical set in bohemian Paris, cemented his reputation for kinetic, anachronistic musical spectacle across his self-described Red Curtain trilogy. The Great Gatsby extended his maximalist visual sensibility to Fitzgerald's Jazz Age novel, while Elvis, a biographical portrait of the rock and roll icon, became one of his most acclaimed and commercially successful films. Luhrmann's consistently maximalist, music-driven visual spectacle has made him one of the most distinctive stylists in contemporary world cinema.
