Amedeo Nazzari, born in Cagliari in 1907, was one of the biggest male stars of Italian cinema from the late thirties to the fifties. Tall and handsome, often compared to Errol Flynn, he became a national heartthrob with aviation drama Luciano Serra Pilota (1938) and continued through wartime and post-war melodramas such as Chains (1949) and Nobody's Children (1951), massive hits at the Italian box office. He gave a witty, self-aware performance as the film-star lover of Giulietta Masina in Fellini's Nights of Cabiria (1957), and remained a familiar screen presence into the seventies. By the time of his death in 1979 he had appeared in more than a hundred films, incarnating a full era of Italian popular cinema.
