Alfonso Cuarón is a Mexican director born in Mexico City, celebrated for technically virtuosic films spanning intimate coming-of-age drama, fantasy blockbuster, and large-scale science fiction. Y Tu Mamá También, a frank road-trip drama examining adolescent sexuality against Mexico's political and class landscape, established his international reputation, while Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban brought a darker visual maturity to the franchise. Children of Men, a dystopian thriller renowned for its extended, unbroken action sequences, and Gravity, an extraordinary technical achievement set almost entirely in orbital space that won him the Academy Award for Best Director, confirmed his mastery of long-take visual choreography. Roma, a deeply personal, black-and-white memoir of his own childhood housekeeper in 1970s Mexico City, won him a second Best Director Oscar. Cuarón's combination of technical innovation with deep personal and social engagement has made him one of the most significant directors of his generation.
