Ahn Sung-ki, born in Daegu, South Korea in 1952, is widely regarded as the elder statesman of Korean cinema. A former child star who began acting in the late 1950s, he re-emerged in adulthood as the essential leading man of the Korean New Wave, playing the punchdrunk boxer in Park Kwang-su s Chilsu and Mansu (1988) and the exhausted retired agent in Lee Myung-se s Nowhere to Hide (1999). He later delivered one of the great late-career turns as the ageing rocker in Radio Star (2006). Understated, gentlemanly and utterly reliable, Ahn is a living monument of Korean film.
